The Role of the Holy Spirit

Author and missionary Rick Renner wrote, “Many Christians live and die never knowing the fellowship and companionship of the Holy Spirit”. I can testify. I grew up in church that never mentioned the Holy Spirit except in the “Doxology”. I still remember standing in the pews and reading:

Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye Heavenly Host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

All I knew about the Holy Spirit was He descended like a dove and landed on the Lord’s shoulder at His baptism. I never heard a message about God the Holy Spirit or His role in our lives. As a result, I missed out on a lot – and so do many Christians today.

In the Gospel of John, Jesus frequently taught about the Holy Spirit and His role in our life. Only when we become aware of His purpose and goals can we fully benefit from His ministry. Let’s take a look at two things Jesus taught.

John 14:26
26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

John 16:13
13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

These two verses communicate four things the Holy Spirit wants to do for every believer.

The Holy Spirit will teach you.
The Holy Spirit will bring to your remembrance the things Jesus said.
The Holy Spirit will guide you into all truth.
The Holy Spirit will tell you things to come.
Glory to God! We can and should expect the Holy Spirit to teach us, guide us into all truth, bring all things to our remembrance, and tell us things to come! In addition, the Holy Spirit knows more than just spiritual things. He is God! He is omniscient! Yes, The Holy Spirit will teach us the Word of God but He can also teach us:

How to be a good husband
How to be a good wife
How to raise our children
Where to invest
How to fix something
How to restore dysfunctional aspects of our lives
What to say when witnessing to others!
We get excited because we have access to the internet and the vast amounts of knowledge available on demand. However, God is bigger, better, and wiser than the internet. In addition, God never makes a mistake, presents faulty information, or makes a typo. His information can be trusted.

God has given the Holy Spirit to benefit our lives. He is a Person that we can develop a relationship with. Notice what Paul said at the end of 2 Corinthians.

2 Corinthians 13:14
14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.

God wants us to enjoy the communion, partnership, and fellowship of the Holy Spirit everyday!
